MONROVIA, September 6 (LINA) - Maryland County Senator Dan Morias has said it is the House of Representatives that should initiate a resolution concerning the possible postponement of the October 14 Mid-term Senatorial elections, and not the Senate.

His views came at a time when majority of the senators in session had voted for the postponement of the October 14 elections, as suggested by the National Elections Commission (NEC).
He said while he is aware that the postponement is inevitable, he is just as “aware that there is no guide written in the Liberian Constitution by which that basic provision can be altered without Constitutional amendment.
Speaking further on the issue Thursday, Morias reminded the Senate that in such a situation, “the decision that is made has credibility primarily when it can be shown that its proponents were not acting out of self interest, but rather national interest.”
Morias suggested that as a way forward, the lower House would be the proper body to kick off a joint resolution, since its current members tenure would neither be extended nor diminished by the postponement of the elections.
He added that the document “can then be concurred with by the Senate on the basis of national interest and emergency.
The senator further added that if the resolution is not initiated by the lower House, it is possible that it could be vulnerable to legal challenges on the assumption that senators were promoting their self interest.
