The acting Chairman of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), Cllr. Augustine Toe, has said the death of former Chief Justice Johnnie N. Lewis is a “major blow” to the judicial system of Liberia.

Cllr. Lewis died at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center on Tuesday, January 19, 2015.

Eulogizing the former Chief Justice when he appeared on the ELBC “Super Morning Show”, Cllr. Toe enumerated the numerous contributions made by the late Chief Justice to the country, especially in the legal sector.

He explained that the administration of the fallen Chief Justice brought some level of dignity to the legal profession, adding: “He would be remembered for the discipline he instilled in the legal field during his administration.”

The late Lewis was appointed the first Chief Justice during the first term of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and resigned his post on August 28, 2012 for health reasons.

He was honorably retired by the Liberian Government on April 14, 2013.
