MONROVIA, January 28 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says it is unacceptable that a large percentage of Liberia’s population does not have access to clean pipe-borne water.
She stressed that this needs to be addressed, and that the government intends to allocate resources under the County Development Fund to correct the situation, the Liberia News Agency reports.
Delivering her Annual Message Monday at the National Legislature, the President said to date the government has been able to provide clean water to 67 percent of the population of 3.5 million, adding: “It is still unacceptable.”
She narrated that operations for the reconstruction of water systems in six county capitals that were stalled due to the Ebola crisis will soon resume.
Commenting on the sanitation situation, Pres. Sirleaf said access to sanitation as defined by international standards is particularly unsatisfactory with 17 percent of the population having adequate facilities.
“We have to and must change the situation,” she emphasized.
