MONROVIA January 30 (LINA) - Three employees of the Liberia Nation Newspaper sent to the Monrovia City Court for allegedly faking a tax clearance were released Friday by Magistrate Kennedy Peabody.
The three defendants were released on “personal recognizance” to their lawyers until the case is heard.
Police arrested Benedict Danuweli , Samuel Hasay and Augustine Brown on January 26 and charged them with forgery and criminal facilitation following a complaint by Charles Roberts, a Customs Officer at the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).
A police charge sheet quoted Roberts as saying he discovered in the LRA system a fake tax clearance for 2015 in the name of the Liberia Nation Newspaper only to discover later that it belonged to Trans-Liberia Promoters.
During police investigation, Danuweli admitted to the allegation, noting that they did it in an attempt to meet NASCORP’s requirement for a tax clearance before benefits are paid.
