MONROVIA, February 5 (LINA) - Former Public Works Minister Samuel Kofi Woods will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Armed Forces Day celebration on February 11, the Ministry of Defense has announced.

Woods will speak on the theme “Enhancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations,” according to an itinerary from the ministry issued Thursday.

This year’s observance marks the 58th Armed Forces Day anniversary and 107th years of the existence of the Liberian army.

Armed Forces Day was legislated in 1957 to commemorate the services rendered by Liberia’s veterans and active duty soldiers in defense of the nation.

Pre-celebration activities will begin on Friday, February 6, with a Jummat Service at the Gurley Street Mosque, while on Saturday, February 7, members of the AFL will partake in a cleanup exercise in Buchannan, Grand Bassa County.

A Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service will be held on Sunday, February 8, at the Tubman Memorial United Methodist Church in Paynesville, while a symposium takes place on February 9 at the Monrovia City Hall.

Upon concluding the official indoor program on February 11 at the Barclay Training Center, members of the AFL will parade the principal streets of central Monrovia, the release said.
