Defense Minister Brownie J. Samukai has stressed the need for additional funding to the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) to implement its development programs.
He said the funding will complete the Tedee housing project, purchase uniforms and other apparels and accessories for the national army.
It will also cover costs for maintenance of equipment and assets of the military, Samukai said in remarks at the 58th Armed Forces Day celebrations at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia on Wednesday.
Samukai noted that the completion of the Todee housing project will help decongest military barracks and provide additional classrooms for eligible dependants of the military personnel.
Reflecting on 2014, Samukai praised the professional capacity of the AFL under the leadership of Brig./Gen. Daniel D. Ziankhan, Chief of Staff of the AFL, describing the military as men and women better equipped and prepared to serve the Liberian people.
He noted the rehabilitation of several roads in Bong and Montsesrrado counties by the Engineering Battalion, coupled with the collaboration with the U.S. Military engineers in the construction of ETUs in Bomi, Cape Mount, Bassa and Rivercess counties as few of the many achievements of the AFL.
He, however, lamented the January 27 passing of Nigerian Major Gerneral Suraj Abdurrahman, former Commanding Officer of the AFL.
