MONROVIA, February 16 (LINA) - The National Elections Commission (NEC) has certificated the senators-elect of Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties.

The certification of Cllr. Varney Sherman of Grand Cape Mount County and Cllr. Morris Saytumah of Bomi County took place Monday at the headquarters of the NEC in Monrovia.

On January 3, 2015, the NEC certificated 12 of the 15 senators elected during the December 20, 2014 Special Senatorial Election but three of the senators-elect, Cllr. Sherman, Cllr. Saytumah and James Tornolah of Margibi County were not certificated due to a Supreme Court Stay Order arising from complaints of alleged electoral mal-practice filed by some candidates against their election.

Speaking at the Certification ceremony in Monrovia, the Acting NEC Chairman Cllr. Sarah M. Toe said after conducting hearing into complaints filed against the elected senators, the Board of Commissioners reaffirmed the election of the individuals because the complainants could not prove the allegations.

“Consequently, the Supreme Court of Liberia last week rescinded its decision to prohibit the certification of Cllrs. Sherman and Saytumah of Cape Mount and Bomi Counties,” she said.

“This is a clear indication that our democracy is maturing. It is therefore the wish of the
Commission that this practice of reverting to the law whenever a citizen feels aggrieved in a process will resonate   in all areas of our lives as citizens of Liberia.” Cllr. Toe concluded.

Speaking on behalf of the newly-certificated senators, Saytumah lauded the NEC, Supreme Court and the electorate for a process that legitimized their election as senators of Bomi and Cape Mount Counties respectively.
