MONROVIA, February 17 (LINA) – The Liberian Senate Tuesday mandated its committees on Foreign Affairs and Education to probe alleged financial difficulties facing Liberian students in Morocco and report on Tuesday, February 24.
The decision was taken after the Secretary of the Senate, Nanborlor Singhbe, read a communication from Lofa County Senator George Tengbeh dated February 9 on the issue.
Though the letter was not debated, concerns were raised about the reported non-payment of allowances for nine months by the Ministry of Education for the students.
“While we appreciate efforts by the Ministry to expose our citizens to foreign education, it is also paramount that the ministry fulfills its financial duties to them to buttress their ability to concentrate,” the letter stated.
It called for the committees to examine mechanisms put in place by the ministry to sustain students studying in other countries to avoid them using other means of survival that do not represent the country.
It can be recalled that during the 2013/2014 academic year, the Moroccan Government in partnership with the Liberian Government recruited 35 students for graduate and under-graduate studies at the Moroccan Institute of Higher Education.
They were to study midwifery, nursing, medicine, geology, maternal and child health, among other courses.
