MONROVIA, February 23 (LINA) -President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Armah Zolu Jallah, is calling for a single currency regime in Liberia.

He said this can be fostered through the appropriate legislation to strengthen the Liberian economy and empower the country’s small and medium enterprises to uplift the country to middle class level.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Pro-Tempore Jallah made the call Monday at a one-day High Level Roundtable Conference on addressing the Economic and Constitutional Implications of Liberia’s Dual Currency Regime.

The conference held at the Monrovia City Hall was organized by the Governance Commission in collaboration with the Constitution Review Committee.

Pro-Tempore Jallah noted that embracing Liberia’s local currency was important as a unique symbol of the country's nationhood and the pride of the citizenry.

He stressed the need for policy makers to not only practice fiscal discipline but to closely monitor the level of dollarization, adding that dollarization should be calculated and published periodically by the Central Bank of Liberia.

Also in remarks at the program, the Chairman of the Governance Commission, Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, pointed out that the purpose of the roundtable was to illuminate the monetary and related fiscal issues having to do with challenges facing citizens whose worsening plight could be alleviated through constitutional amendment.
