MONROVIA, February 24 (LINA) - The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has vowed to prosecute parents whose children are caught selling in the streets or engaged in activities the ministry regards as unhealthy for a child.
The ministry says it is “deeply concern about the failure of parents to keep their children off the streets” while schools are now in session.
In a press statement issued in Monrovia on Monday, the ministry announced a new regulatory mechanism to monitor kids involved in street peddling will go into effect March 2, 2015 and will deal drastically with parents whose children are caught.
Meanwhile, the ministry is calling on parents to take advantage of the government’s free compulsory education package to keep their children in school amidst the economic constraints facing them.
The ministry is also calling on religious, civil society groups, community leaders and the general public to buttress the government’s effort to keep the children off the streets by keeping them in school.
