MONROVIA, February 24 (LINA) - Grand Cape Mount County Senator Varney Sherman and Lofa County Senator Steve Zargo have been elected and inducted by the Liberian Senate as Chairpersons on the Judiciary and Defense Committees respectively.
The two, who have worked in their respective fields for 35 and 20 years respectively, were elected Tuesday during the body’s regular session on white ballots.
The uncontested victories of the senators indicates that Lofa County now controls the Rules, Order and Administration and Defense Committees, while Grand Cape Mount County presides over the Ways, Means, Finance and Budget as well as Judiciary Committees of the Liberian Senate.
Prior to the adoption of the body’s agenda, Senators Joseph Nagbe and Jewel Taylor of Sinoe and Bong counties respectively suggested the deferment of the election to facilitate further consultations and inclusiveness of other counties in the leadership.
Following a heated debate, majority of the senators voted to hold the elections.
Earlier, on February 19, the body elected seven of its members to serve in various leadership positions.
