MONROVIA, February 25(LINA) - Montserrado County District 9 Representative, Munah E. Youngblood, has underscored the need to establish Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs) at key border points as a preventive measure.  

 

Youngblood noted that it was “troubling” for Liberia to reopen its borders in the absence of ETUs at these points as the disease is still active in neighboring Sierra Leone and Guinea, the Liberia News Agency reports.

She noted that even though she is not against the reopening of the borders as announced by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf last week, Liberia needed to take precautionary measures at the border points for the sake of safety and prevention.

Rep. Youngblood spoke in session Tuesday after Deputy Chief Clerk read her communication to Speaker J. Alexander Tyler requesting Plenary to invite the Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization and the Minister of Health to give updates on safety measures and protocols at border posts.

The communication was forwarded to the Committees on Health and National Security for scrutiny with the mandate to report to Plenary in one week
Liberia closed its land borders last year at the height of the Ebola outbreak.

The first case of Ebola in the country was imported from neighboring Guinea in March 2014.
