MONROVIA, March 4 (LINA) – Acting Police Director for Administration William Mulbah has said the Liberia National Police (LNP) is prepared to take over security after the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) departs the country.
He lauded the assistance of the United Nations Police (UNPOL) during its stay in the country and assured the public that the LNP is up to the task to handle security upon UNMIL’s departure.
According to the Liberia News Agency, Mulbah made the statement at a program marking International Women's Day at the National Police headquarters in Monrovia Wednesday.
Also speaking at the program, an official of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), John Gachomo, said UN agencies have promoted the participation of women as equal partners with men in achieving sustainable development, peace, security, and full respect for human rights.
The UNDP official was unhappy with the “unacceptably high incidents” of rape cases with increasing number of victims being brutalized.
“We should continue to encourage LNP to recruit and retain more women as a strategy to improve police response and strengthen public trust and confidence in the police,” the UN official said.
