GBAIN, March 9 (LINA) - The Dokodan Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Gbain, Nimba County fears that its members would lose millions of Liberian dollar worth of crops if a favorable market condition is not provided to sell their produce.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency over the weekend in Gbain, the Co-chair of the Cooperative, Robert Borgon said 3,600 bags of cleaned rice and 2,400 bags of seed rice produced by over 100 farmers could not be sold due to unfavorable market condition.

Borgon told LINA that a bag of cleaned rice was being sold at US$50 while a bag of seed rice was sold at US$25.

The Cooperative official said since the Ebola outbreak, farmers have no access to buyers or any favorable market condition, creating a source of worry for the farmers group.

He, therefore, called on the Cooperative Development Agency, United Nations Development Program, Ministry of Agriculture, World Food Program and other agro-related organizations and partners to identify market for the farmers to sell their crops.

Borgon observed that the crops would spoil if not sold quickly, creating a serious economic hardship for farmers and affect the 2015 farming season because farmers will be unable to meet their needs for inputs.

The Dokodan Cooperative Society is one of the oldest farmers’ union and productive cooperatives in Nimba County that began its operations in the county since 1975.
