MONROVIA, March 31(LINA) -The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Liberia, Ambassador Tiina Intelmann, has urged Liberians to invest in education to transform the living conditions of the people and enhance the development of the nation.
Ambassador Intelmann observed that education is the light that empowers the people to maintain and sustain a stable society which, she noted, has been undermined by so many conflicts on the African Continent.
The EU official made the call Tuesday at a one-day Peace Education Training Seminar for university students across Liberia organized by the Liberia Media Center and sponsored by the EU at a local hotel in Monrovia.
She indicated that Liberia has the potential to become a great nation in Africa, but stressed that Liberians need to come together and work collectively to build the country on a long-term program that would ensure sustainable peace and development.
She pointed out that the EU is committed to supporting long-term development programs not only in roads and infrastructure, but also in building human capacity through education.
Intelmann noted that peace education programs have a tremendous role to play in changing Liberians’ behavior from conflict to peace.
She stressed that education will enhance the minds of the people which have been destroyed by conflict over the years, noting that it might take a whole generation to recover.
She added that despite the many resources the international community provides for African countries to transform the living conditions of their people, they still remain the same as a result of conflicts.
