GBARNGA, April 3 (LINA) – Delegates at the Constitutional Review Conference in Gbarnga, Bong County on Thursday, April 2, overwhelmingly voted in favor of the controversial proposition 25 which calls for Liberia to be a Christian State.
Following hours of heated argument and protests, especially by delegates from the Muslim community, the participants unanimously voted for Liberia to be called and identified as a Christian nation.
The Muslim delegates earlier contended that the proposition be extracted from the list of propositions because it contravened democratic tenets and that it is aimed at targeting one group of people.
The delegates also voted for the Constitution to guarantee inheritance right for traditional women, and that customary laws should be made constitutional.
At the same time, the delegates voted against the proposition that people in prolonged co-habitation should enjoy marital status and the rights appertaining thereto.
All of the propositions voted upon by the delegates at the conference are to be submitted to the National Legislature for further deliberations and later presented to the public in a referendum as amendments for Liberians to either accept or reject.
