MONROVIA, April 21 (LINA) -The Officer-In-Charge and Deputy Commander of UNMIL Police, Mr. John Gachomo, has stressed the need for the Liberia National Police (LNP) to effectively engage communities after last Thursday’s Red Light incident.

Speaking Tuesday when he donated communication equipment on behalf UNMIL to the LNP for use by its department of Public Affairs, Mr. Gachomo, said this was necessary because it will establish a mechanism to constructively engage the public across the country.

It can be recalled that tension erupted between motorcyclists and police officers at the Red Light Market in Paynesville City following the death of a commercial motorcyclist in the traffic.

The situation brought normal activities in the area to a standstill last Thursday afternoon as residents were forced to flee to safety, while witnesses reported seeing motorcyclists burning down police depots.

Mr. Gachomo said having a clear messaging defined by media policy and community engagement strategy will help to ease tension with between motorcyclists and the LNP and help the police to win  the trust and confidence of citizens.
