(LINA) - More than 10,000 undergraduate students of the University of Liberia have been notified of poor academic performance.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency on the UL main campus Tuesday, the Vice President for University Relations, Atty. Norris Tweah, said the notification serves as a warning for the students to improve their performance during the current semester.

He indicated that when grades are tabulated for the current semester, those on double probation would be suspended for one semester.

Atty. Tweah noted that three successive failures (semester Grade Point Average below 2.0) would lead to expulsion in keeping with the University Student Handbook.

He said the lists were compiled by the University’s Office of Enrollment Management.

The first list, he disclosed, shows that 5, 349 students are on single probation after failing to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.000 or (C) for the 2nd Semester of academic year 2012/2013.

Atty. Tweah said the double probation list shows that the Business College, the university’s largest college with an enrollment of 11, 242 students, has 1,955 students or (17 %) on double probation, while the College of Agriculture and Forestry, with a total student enrollment of 3,551, accounts for 755 students or (21 %) on double probation.

According to Tweah, the Science College, with a total student enrollment of 8,000, has 1,852 students or (23 %) on double probation, while the Liberia College, that has a total enrollment of 5,524 students, has 598 students or 10.8 % on double probation, and the Teachers College with 1,993 students has 186 or (0.9 %) on double probation.

“When broken down further by departments, the double probation list shows that the Accounting Department has 819 students, representing 15.33%; General Agriculture has 542 students, representing 10.14%; Biology Department has 533 students, representing 10.35%; and Geology Department has 532 students, representing 9.9%, among others,” he added.

“A student is considered not in good academic standing, that is, on probation, if his/her Grade Point Average for any semester falls below 2.000 or (C) at the end of the semester,” he quoted the Student Handbook as saying.

He further quotes the handbook as saying that students on double probation may remain at the University if their cumulative averages are not less than 2.000 at the end of two semesters.
