MONROVIA, April 27 (LINA) - Margibi County Senator Oscar Cooper has challenged the Legislative Conference Committee to fast-track negotiations on the Decent Work Bill of 2010 to ensure its passage into law.
Cooper told the ELBC talk show, ‘the Super Morning Show’ Monday that it was important to finally pass the bill which has been languishing at the National Legislature for five years.
He said passage of the Bill will bring relief to the labor sector and guarantee job security in the country.
It can be recalled that the House of Representatives last year passed the bill at the minimum wage of US$5.60 per day for unskilled employees as recommended by the Joint Committee on Labor and Judiciary in its report after scrutinizing it.
The House immediately forwarded the bill to the Liberian Senate for concurrence, but the Senate came up with a different version that set the minimum wage at US$6.00 per day.
This situation prompted the setting up of a Conference Committee comprising five members from each of the two Houses to synchronize the two different versions produced by the upper and lower Houses.
However, since that time, the Conference Committee has not submitted its report to the two Houses for legislative debate.
The minimum wage in Liberia currently stands at US$2.00 per day.
