SANNIQUELLIE, April 28 (LINA) -The Clan Chief of the Bain Garr Chiefdom, Nimba County, Mr. Eric Dunkar, has been suspended for ‘Poro Society’ initiation carried out in the chiefdom.

The Chief allegedly permitted Poro activities in Dingamo Town that initiated five boys of school going ages, while formal academic activities are ongoing in the country.

The County Inspector Ms. Reginal Mehn issued the suspension letter to the Clan Chief of the Bain Garr Chiefdom recently.

According to the letter, Chief Dunkar was suspended for the period of three months without pay, beginning April 24, 2015.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) recently in Sanniquellie, Mehn disclosed that the Chief, an influential authority in the area, brought to a standstill the traffic between Ganta and Sanniquellie for two hours last week on the premise that the Poro society was graduating pupils.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced a ban on the activities of the Sande and Poro traditional institutions at the height of the Ebola c rises in 2014, warning that stern action would be taken against chiefs and others who engage in the initiation of children.

Last week, the local authority suspended Paramount Chief Allen Flomo and Clan Chief Tokpah Ylargonwon of Gbwouar Clan for permitting Sande initiation in the area, denying seven girls access to formal education for academic 2014/2015.
