MONROVIA, May 1 (LINA) - U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Deborah Malac says the involvement in the Ebola fight of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) has enabled Liberian and foreign healthcare workers to carry out the herculean task of treating and saving the lives of Ebola patients.
She said before the arrival of the USPHS, healthcare workers feared that if they became infected with Ebola while treating the sick, they might not receive proper care.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the U.S. diplomat made the statement at the closing ceremony of the Monrovia Medical Unit (MMU) at Camp Eason and turning over of the facilities to the Government of Liberia which took place at the site in Charlesville, Margibi County on Thursday, April 30.
The US envoy thanked the Commander of the USPHS Commissioned Corps, Rear Admiral Scott Giberson, for the hard work he and members of the USPHS Commissioned Corps have done in West Africa.
“For the past six months, your devotion to duty, careful treatment of patients, and Camp Eason’s state-of-the-art Monrovia Medical Unit (MMU) played a crucial role in saving the lives of Liberian and foreign healthcare workers stricken with the Ebola virus,” she said.
She noted that the work by the USPHS Commissioned Corps has been a key element in the United States’ Ebola response effort.
