MONROVIA, May 5 (LINA) – The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to a long-term relationship that will provide more opportunities to fill most of Liberia’s development gaps and achieve its human rights agenda.

The Head of the EU delegation to Liberia, Ambassador Tiina Intelmann, made the commitment Tuesday when she appeared on the ELBC “Super Morning Show”.

Meanwhile, Intelmann has observed that good governance and respect for human rights are cardinal tools that enable a nation achieve its development goals.

The EU envoy believes that without a good governance system, a nation will make “very little progress in achieving its development goals.”

Intelmann noted that good governance should not only be perceived as financial management, but rather the holistic approach to managing the affairs of a nation.

She stressed that although all of the funds and support that are given to Liberia are being used effectively, the nation still has considerable development challenges which can only be tackled through effective governance.

“Without good governance you can virtually do nothing; good governance and the enjoyment of human rights are the values that the EU thinks are very important and we hope that our partners also share these ideals with us,” Intelmann said.

The EU can be credited for its massive response to Liberia’s Ebola outbreak as evidenced by the fact that up to present EU has contributed over1.2 billion Euros to the overall fight against the Ebola disease.
