MONROVIA, May 7 (LINA) – The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (MOPT) has disclosed that it is developing an E-government and Universal Access Program as part of four priority projects to be completed over the next three years.
Posts and Telecommunications Minister Dr. Frederick Norkeh said the projects, which also include the introduction of a Postal Financial Service or money order as well as the development of a National Postal Address System, are being developed in line with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s vision and development goals.
Addressing the Ministry of Information regular press conference at the Ministry on Tuesday, Norkeh indicated that the planned projects are also in concert with MOPT’s vision of becoming the leading institution that promotes trusted Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and postal services, while providing social and economic benefits for all.
Norkeh explained that the E-government project will ensure the use of ICT by government to provide services to citizens, transact business and enhance its own internal operations, adding, “It will provide a paperless environment.”
On the Universal Access Program, Norkeh explained that it will also enhance the provision of access to quality ICT and telecommunications facilities to areas that are currently underserved or not served due to lack of profitability.
He pointed out that the introduction of postal financial service or money order will enhance the provision of easy access to remittances through postal facilities around the country, while the development of a National Postal Address System will ensure that Liberia operates a unique address system which will provide easy contact for the provision of public services.
He said the World Bank, African Union (AU) and the Government of Liberia, among others, are providing the funding to implement the four projects.
