(LINA) – The Coalition for Transparency and Accountability in Education (COTAE) coordinator Jonathan Domah has said the promotion of health activities on school campuses should be prioritized in the national education policy.

Domah stated that Liberian students should be healthy and physically fit and be protected against sicknesses by maintaining proper sanitation and hygiene practices on campus and at home.

He made the assertion Tuesday at a one-day working session to gather stakeholders’ input into the Draft School Health and Wellness Plan for students in Liberia held at a local hotel in Sinkor near Monrovia.

He indicated that the draft plan will look at the availability of professional nurses and clinics on school campuses across Liberia, as well as the kind of food sold and the venders’ medical and health status.

He pointed out that healthy school environment and healthy students will enhance the performance of students in their studies.

Domah stressed that the hand washing practice at school should be re-enforced despite Liberia being declared Ebola free, and added that if this process continues it will help students to remain healthy on campuses.

COTAE comprises five organizations - Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia, Liberian Education for all Technical Committee, Liberia Economic Journalists Association, Federation of Liberian Youth and the Liberia Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

The coalition was formed under the aegis of the Open Society Initiative of West Africa (OSIWA) which supports education and other programs that promote socio-economic and human rights in Liberia and across West Africa.
