MONROVIA, April 12(LINA) -The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated several cartoons of books to public elementary schools in Jrao and Jloh Statutory Districts in Grand Kru County.

The books are titled: Fun In Working Together, Little Turtle and Big Turtle and Father’s Farm, according to a reporter of the Voice of Sasstown Community Radio Station, A. Blamo Monu.
He told the Liberia News Agency via mobile phone Saturday that an official of UNI CEF, Thompson W. Karlee, presented the books at a ceremony in Sasstown City recently.
The books are intended for first graders in the two districts, said Karlee, who did not disclose the cost of the books, but warned school authorities against selling them because they are not meant to be sold.
He observed that most Liberian students lack reading culture, and indicated that UNICEF plans to help promote the culture of reading among Liberian students, especially children.
Receiving the books, the Principal of Sasstown High School, G. Melvin Young, thanked UNICEF for the gesture and assured that the books will be distributed to the students free of charge.
Mr. Young noted that the availability of the reading materials will positively impact the learning process of the children, saying that they will be kept busy during and after school hours more than ever before.
Meanwhile, the Sasstown High School principal has appealed to other institutions operating in the country to emulate the example of UNICEF and intervene in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and English at schools in the two districts.
