MONROVIA, October 1 (LINA) - The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has erected two waste compartments at the Ebola Treatment Centers at the Island Clinic on Bushrod Island and ELWA in Paynesville.

LWSC managing director Charles Allen told a news conference Monday that the facilities, erected two weeks ago, are part of efforts by the LWSC to help tackle the

Ebola virus, according to the Liberia News Agency (LINA).

He said the state-owned entity is in touch with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on measures to mitigate and treat waste products coming from the centers.

Allen also said LWSC is working with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on methods to transport the waste to a suitable site.

Allen noted that as more Ebola treatment centers are established in Liberia there will be a growth in solid waste, a situation that will demand much from the LWSC in the face of the logistic problem confronting it.

“We are advised to merge the normal solid waste with the wastes coming from the Ebola treatment centers to be transported and disposed due to limited logistics,” he said, adding “Right now, we have one old waste collection truck.”
