MONROVIA, April 21(LINA) -The President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Abdulai Kamara, has underscored the need for media practitioners to exhibit a high degree of professionalism in their reportage to win the respect of the public.
Kamara made the statement Monday when he and other media practitioners, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sky Communications, Martin Brown, and the Publisher of the Chronicle Newspaper, Phillibert Brown, appeared on the ELBC’s radio talk show, ‘The Super Morning Show’.
Kamara pointed out that the media, as a medium that helps people to know and understand what is happening around them, is under obligation to provide factual and balanced information to meet the requirement of credibility in its work.
He said it was important that media practitioners use the freedom now available to them to do things that will bring dignity and honor to the profession.
For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sky Communications, Martin Brown, called on media owners to take steps aimed at generating more money to satisfactorily pay their employees, particularly journalists, in order to keep them in the profession.
Brown observed that professional journalists were leaving the profession for other professions because they are not paid attractive salaries.
Also speaking, the Publisher of the Chronicle Newspaper, Phillibert Brown, frowned on the proliferation of reporters in the country, adding that most of them enter the profession without appropriate training.
“In recent times the roster of the PUL was about 44, but now it is about 400, how this has grown to such a high number in such a short period of time beats my imagination,” Brown said.
