MONROVIA, May 31(LINA) -Members of the House of Representatives have constituted a ‘Conference Committee’ comprising the House Committees on Elections and Judiciary.
The Committee has been charged to work with a similar committee established by the Liberian Senate to harmonize the two versions of the bills passed by both chambers regarding application and registration fees for political candidates seeking elective posts.
According to the Liberia News Agency, Plenary mandated Presiding Officer James Binnie of Maryland County, to constitute the ‘Conference Committee on Thursday in response to a request by the Liberian Senate in a communication acknowledging receipt of a letter of concurrence from the Lower House.
In the communication, the Liberian Senate acknowledged receipt of a letter informing it that the lower House had concurred with the amendment of Bill #18 entitled: An Act amending certain provisions of the 1986 Elections Law”.
The communication stated that Section 7.3 (2) of the Act, which is on application and registration fees of candidates, was amended as follows: For the office of the President, US$ 2,500; Vice President,US$1,500; Senate, US$750.00; Representative, US$500; Paramount Chief, US$50; Clan Chief, US$25 and Town Chief- US$10.
The Liberian Senate then asked the lower House to also constitute its own Conference Committee to harmonize the two versions of the Bill passed by both Chambers.
Members of the Liberian Senate Conference Committee are Fredrick Cherue, Chairman; Peter Coleman, Joseph Nagbe, Armah Jallah and Geraldine Doe-Sheriff as members.
