MONROVIA, May 31 (LINA) - The Special Representative of the African Union (AU) to Liberia, Ambassador Oluwatoyin Solaja, has called for unity and reconciliation among Liberians to ensure the development of their country.

He said that after a protracted period of civil conflict, Liberians need to put aside their differences to help galvanize peace and unity in the post-war era of their country.

Ambassador Solaja made the call Friday in a speech delivered on his behalf by his Senior Political Adviser, Mr. Prosperous Aittoo, at the National Unification Day Jubilee Celebration (1964 -2014) held at the Liberia Chamber Of Commerce on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.

The AU envoy observed that the program was organized at a strategic period in Liberia’s history, when the issue of peace and reconciliation is paramount and when there is a growing need for all Liberians to unite and develop their motherland.

Solaja pointed out that the easiest way to development is for Liberians to collectively muster their capabilities and prudently manage their resources.

He also gave a brief history on the late President William VS. Tubman's National Unification Policy, which he introduced purposely to bring an end to ethnic, gender and settler-indigene divides in the country.

Solaja said he was informed that the celebration of the National Unification Day is meant to draw support towards reinforcing this policy.
