MONROVIA, June 1(LINA) - The President of the Stella Maris Polytechnic, Catholic Sister Mary Laurene, is urging Liberians to develop the culture of reading books to enhance their knowledge base of local and international issues.

She said reading books and other educational materials would help Liberians to do critical analysis of national issues and prevent being misinformed and misled by others.

The Stella Maris Polytechnic boss made the statement in an interview with Liberia News Agency Saturday at the Liberia National Spelling Bee Program at the Monrovia City Hall.

She noted that the lack of a reading habit among Liberians has contributed to poor performance of students in schools and public examinations in the country.

Sister Laurene explained that if schools would start teaching students how to read effectively, it would help to improve the standard of education in Liberia, noting that only spelling competition will not lift the level of education in the country.

She observed that more Liberians do not read books as a habit, but pointed out that it is about time for Liberians to develop the reading culture which will also help transform the education sector.
