ZWEDRU CITY, June 2 (LINA) -The Zwedru Magisterial Court has charged ten persons with illegal possession of drugs and smuggling of dangerous substances.
Marcus Solo (alias Marcus Garvey) , Doris Dorbor, Pewee Kesselly, Mack Wesseh, Prince Quiah, Trikon Kpo, Jimmy Gaye, Christain Steward, Ekie Johnson and Peter Sayee, were charged following a joint raid by the Drug Enforcement Agency and Liberia National Police in Zwedru.
All have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them by the Magisterial Court.
Following the reading of the charges as part of preliminary hearing before the court recently, Associate Magistrate T. Shad Dweh, informed the defendants of their rights under the law.
He added that the charges are bailable before indictment and final judgment in
court.
He then ordered their detention at the National Palace of Corrections in Zwedru pending trial at a court of competent jurisdiction since the case is beyond the jurisdiction of the magistrate court.
Meanwhile, three of the accused, Ms. Ekie Johnson and two others, reportedly escaped from court officers while being transferred to the Zwedru Correction Palace.
They are said to be on the run.
The Police/DEA raid, which took place early last week, has been hailed by citizens and residents who want drug dealers and users brought under control.
They expressed concern that many young people are becoming drug addicts overnight, sometimes resulting in madness, a situation they said needs to be reversed.
