MONROVIA, June 3 (LINA) - The Principal of the William V. S. Tubman High School in Monrovia wants the Liberian Government to contract teachers to teach in public schools in the country.

Principal J. Sackie Kennedy explained that contracting teachers for government schools would curtail the series of strike actions and ghost names on government payroll.

Mr. Kennedy was speaking to journalists Monday at the William V. S. Tubman High School, where the administrators were overseeing the final exams for students in the junior division, while teachers of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) are on strike.

He indicated that government is paying its teachers more than private institutions, but that private school teachers are teaching based on contracts which can be maintained based on their performance in the classroom.
Kennedy described the action of some MCSS teachers as “unfortunate at this time” in Liberia’s history, when the country is recovering from a devastating civil conflict that has affected the human resource capacity of the nation.

Principal Kennedy emphasized that government should start contracting teachers, instead of teachers being on the Civil Service payroll, emphasizing that teachers who are contracted to teach will ensure that they work hard to retain their contracts each academic year.
