KAKATA, August 5 (LINA) - The Medical Director of the Charles H. Rennie Memorial Hospital in Kakata, Margibi County, is calling on Liberians to see health workers as “soldiers on the front line” in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus .

Dr. Adolphus Yeiah said since the outbreak of the Ebola disease in the country in early March this year, health workers are the most vulnerable because they are always coming in direct contact with persons suspected of or confirmed having the virus.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Dr. Yeiah made the statement at the weekend at the Kakata City Hall during an awareness meeting with local leaders of Margibi County on the danger the Ebola virus poses to the lives of Liberians.

Dr. Yeiah urged Liberians to disabuse their mines of the notion that doctors and nurses are the cause of the rising number of deaths from the Ebola virus, noting, “Why would they take so many years studying to become a doctor or nurse only to come and kill the very people they were trained to cure from their illnesses.”

Dr. Yeiah also expressed dismay at the humiliation doctors and health workers face from the public since the outbreak of the Ebola crisis, noting that this act could undermine efforts and gains being made in the fight against the Ebola disease.

The meeting brought together local and traditional leaders from the various political sub-divisions of Margibi County, who have vowed to join efforts in raising awareness and disseminating information about Ebola in their respective communities.
