MONROVIA, July14 (LINA) - The Secretary General of the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL), Samuel Johnson, has challenge members of the association to contribute to the growth and development of the institution.

He said teachers in The Gambia and Sierra Leone were developing because of the level of contributions they are making to strengthen their associations.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Mr. Johnson made the call when he spoke to a team of journalists Monday at the end of a one-day district meeting of the Montserrado County branch of the NTAL in Monrovia.

He disclosed that the association has completed plans to provide scholarships to female teachers in rural Liberia to help improve their academic and professional standards.

Johnson also urged the teachers to take seriously the NTAL loan scheme launched recently to empower its members to make the needed contributions to the vibrancy of their association, saying, “by this we will be able to help others improve their standards.’’

He emphasized that to ensure efficiency in the NTAL loan scheme, 45 persons from the 15 political sub-divisions of the country were trained by Education International to adequately run the affairs of the loan service.

He revealed teachers will now begin to pay two percent of their salaries instead of the L$50 previously paid across the board to build the financial capacity of the association to implement its plans.
He said this decision was part of the association’s four-year strategic plan adopted at the end of the NTAL's 64th National Convention held in Kakata City, Margibi County, from July 22 to August 3, 2013.
