MONROVIA, August 27 (LINA) - Lofa County Representative Moses Kollie has submitted an Act to criminalize concealing information on communicable and infectious diseases in Liberia to the House of Representatives for enactment.
When enacted, the Act shall be entitled: “2014 Act Criminalizing Concealing Information of Person(s) with Communicable/Contagious Diseases in Liberia”.
According to the Liberia News Agency (LINA), the diseases include Ebola, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, Lassa Fever, Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Smallpox, Typhoid Fever, Measles, Meningitis and Yellow Fever.
The Act stipulates that if a person or group of persons knowingly, intentionally or willfully infect another person or group of persons with any of the above mentioned diseases, such act shall be considered a criminal offense, second degree felony and punishable under the laws of Liberia.
It also states that any person found guilty of committing the criminal offense through a court of competent jurisdiction, shall be punished with two years’ imprisonment, and be liable for the infected person or group of persons’ health condition(s).
Following the reading of the Act in Session on Tuesday by Deputy Chief Clerk, J. Sayfura Geplay, Plenary sent it to the Committees on Health and Judiciary with the mandate to report next week Tuesday.
