MONROVIA, November 17(LINA) -The joint leadership of the National Legislature Monday convened behind closed door at the Capitol Building to discuss the proposed date for the conduct of the Special Senatorial election.

The House of Representatives had on November 11 endorsed a proposal by the National Elections Commission (NEC) for the Special Senatorial Election to take place on December 16, and forwarded the decision to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.

However, the Liberian Senate rejected the NEC proposal on grounds that it is not feasible to hold elections in the face of the existing Ebola crisis and in segments as proposed by NEC.

Legislative sources told the Liberia News Agency that it seems likely that both leaderships will reach a compromised date for the conduct of the election this year.

The sources also said the decision of the closed door meeting will be “fine tuned and announced shortly.”

Meanwhile, NEC has announced the arrival from Ghana of election materials, including ballot papers, for the special senatorial elections with 15 Senatorial seats up for grabs.

The election was scheduled for October 14 but was postponed due to the Ebola outbreak.
