MONROVIA, December 11 (LINA) - Former Education Minister Dr. Othello Gongar has called on government to invest more in education to upgrade the human development index of Liberia.

Gongar made the statement Wednesday at a program marking the observance of Universal Human Rights Day under the auspices of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights, civil society organizations and UNMIL held at the University of Liberia Auditorium in Monrovia.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Gongar’s call is predicated upon the mass failure of students in schools, the West African Examinations Council and University of Liberia entrance exams in recent years.

He pointed out that the mass failure of students should send a signal that Liberia must give priority to education.

“No library and laboratory in junior and senior high schools in the country," he noted, and asked how we expect students to make a successful pass in schools to contribute significantly to the nation's manpower development without these facilities.

Gongar stressed that investment in education will go a long way in improving the livelihood of the citizenry and ensure the growth and development of the country.

The day was celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating 21 years of changing lives through human image” with the slogan “Human Rights 365”
