MONROVIA, December 18 (LINA)-Authorities of the National Housing Authority (NHA) on Thursday provided mortgage certificates to 16 occupants of the Brewerville City Housing Estate.

The occupants now stand the chance of assuming ownership of the housing units if they complete their full  payment.

The initiative was made possible through the US$ 10 million the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) provided the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment (LBDI) to support a mortgage program for properties developed by the NHA.

Speaking at the  ceremony  held in the conference room of LBDI in Monrovia, LBDI President John Davies indicated that the houses do not only provide shelter but also serve as a measure of social standing and prestige.

Mr. Davies said the lack of long-term financing to enable low and medium income earners own homes is one of the major factors that limit housing construction and delivery. This, he noted, has a direct impact on the socio-economic development of the country.

According to the LBDI president,  the aim of the housing initiative is to ensure the achievement of economic justice by making a large quantum of affordable housing available to Liberians in the low-to-middle income brackets for home ownership.

For his part. National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) Director General Dewitt Vonballmoos, said pursuant to the demand in improving the livelihood of Liberians, NASSCORP will continue to provide assistance to the National Housing Authority (NHA) for estate development in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the occupants, Madam Jacqueline McCritty lauded the NHA for giving them mortgage certificates which has made them to become house owners.
