MONROVIA, December 19 (LINA) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged Liberians to resist violence and ensure a transparent election process and further strengthen their quest to eradicate the Ebola virus from Liberia.

He said by holding a peaceful, fair and successful election, Liberians will demonstrate to the world that their democracy is moving forward.

The UN Secretary General made the call Friday when he addressed a joint press conference with President Sirleaf at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a one-day official visit to Liberia. Ban Ki-Moon was accompanied by a 17-member delegation, including the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chan.

“I urge all Liberians to do their part in ensuring that these elections are peaceful and objective and at the same time adhere to public health measures. This election will give Liberians an opportunity to show to the world how far Liberia has come,” he said.

He then praised the government and people of Liberia as well as partners for the efforts exerted in combating the Ebola virus, assuring that the UN remains committed to providing aid to Liberia until the disease is eradicated.

Earlier, President Sirleaf praised the United Nations for its consistent support to Liberia, noting that the people of Liberia recognize the global leadership being exhibited by the UN Secretary General.

She also called on Liberians to embrace the support being provided the country by engaging in the global quest to defeat the Ebola virus.
