MONROVIA, October 24 (LINA) - Lofa County Senator Sumo Kupee has reiterated the need to enact the Child Support Act of 2011.

He made the statement during the reintroduction of the Act in the Plenary of the Senate at the Capitol Building in Monrovia Thursday.

The Act was first submitted in mid 2011 and subsequently sent to committee room for discussion and advice to plenary.

The Act, among other things, seeks to compel all men in Liberia, citizens or non-citizens who have children not living with them, to pay a child support net fee of 20 percent of their income for each child.

Kupee indicated that most Liberian women are exposed to unbearable economic hardship fending for children whose fathers are alive, but have decided to abandon them.

“This Act will force fathers to cater to their children,” he maintained.

Additionally, Kupee pointed out that whether a child is born in or out of wedlock, the father must be responsible for it.

“If the father is not satisfied with the child, he can request for a DNA test," he added.
