VOINJAMA, November 18 (LINA) -Lofa County Superintendent George Dunor has assured public school teachers that modalities are being worked out for speedy and regular payment of their salaries in the county.
Superintendent Dunor’s assurance comes in the wake of reports that more than 1,000 public school teachers assigned in Lofa County are stranded over the slow disbursement of their salaries by a local bank branch in Voinjama City.
Dunor said local authorities were concerned about the constraints teachers facing in receiving their monthly salaries and promised that efforts would be made to resolve the problem.
Earlier, the head of the National Teachers Association Lofa branch, Sorsor Akoi, told the Liberia News Agency that the local bank does not have the capacity to pay more than 2,750 teachers within two days when the bank is operating with a single teller.
He said since the payment of salaries was transferred from the Central Bank to the commercial bank, teachers have continued to face problems in the disbursement of their salaries at the bank
Akoi said another constraint is that teachers traveling from distances like Salayea, Zorzor, Vahun, Foya, Kolahun and Quadou Gboni spend between L$1000 and L$2,500 on transportation, feeding and lodging monthly to travel to Voinjama to get their salaries.
He called on government to urgently address the issue which has the potential to disrupt academic activities when schools reopen and impose financial hardship on teachers.
