MONROVIA, November 27 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has requested the National Legislature to endorse an Act entitled: “The Land Right Act of Liberia.”

The Act, which was co-sponsored by Senators Geraldine Doe-Sheriff of Montserrado and Isaac Nyenabo of Grand Gedeh counties, seeks to put in place legal frameworks and mechanisms for land ownership and rights recognized in the country.

Her statement was contained in a communication to the body dated November 26, 2014 and read by the Secretary of the Senate on Thursday, November 27.

The communication further indicates that upon passage of the Act, families, communities, individuals and legal entities, would enjoy secure land rights free of fear and ensure that customary land is given equal protection as private land.

Meanwhile, the Plenary of the Liberian Senate has mandated its committees on Lands, Mines and Judiciary to review the President’s letter and adequately advise the body.

It can be recalled that in mid-August, the National Legislature endorsed an, “Act against Criminal Conveyance of Land”, which was subsequently signed by the Liberian leader in early October.

This Act is an Amendment of Chapter 15 sub-chapter B, section 15.21 of the Penal Law which states that a surveyor who encourages or uses his influence in the sale or purchase of land, knowing or being in the position to know that the seller of such land has no lawful title, is guilty of first degree felony punishable by fines, a prison term of not less than ten years and a permanent revocation of his license to
practice as a surveyor.
