MONROVIA, December 11 (LINA) – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has requested the National Legislature to extend its extraordinary sitting for one week to enable the National Oil Company of Liberia make full submission on discussions surrounding the final oil blocks initiated in 2002.
Two months ago, the government began negotiating with international partners for the exploration of the final oil blocks initiated under
the 2002 petroleum laws.
“We are nearing completion of the process, but need more time; I therefore request your consideration of a delay in the closure of your honorable body,” the President told the legislature.
The two houses were expected to have taken their annual break in mid-July, but could not because of the State of Emergency occasioned by the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.
Since the lifting of the State of Emergency in early November, the legislature has extended its session for one month running form November 12 to December 12 to enable them perform legislative tasks which were not performed because of the Ebola outbreak.
Following the reading of the communication and heated debates, both houses of the legislature agreed to extend their sitting for one week to enable them delve into unfinished confirmation reports and other business.
Meanwhile, the Liberian leader has nominated for confirmation hearing Jordan Solunteh as Director General of the cabinet, Benedict Sarnor as Minister of Justice, and Rosetta Nagbe Jackollie as Assistant Foreign Minister for Afro-Asian Affairs.
