MONROVIA, October 31 (LINA)- A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) requiring petty traders to register with the commerce ministry has been signed among the Monrovia City Corporation, the National Petty Traders Union of Liberia (NAPETUL) and the ministry.

The MOU, signed at the Monrovia City Hall Thursday, will give petty traders the legitimacy to sell on street sidewalks.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Commerce Minister Axel Addy commended NAPETUL for engaging the government meaningfully rather than in a disorderly fashion, adding, “this has laid the foundation for the signing of the MOU.”

He said government will work with petty traders to develop their capacities and provide them access to loans to expand their businesses.

In remarks at the ceremony, Monrovia City Mayor Clara Doe Mvogo, said the City Corporation will cooperate with the petty traders in their business ventures.

Mvogo urged the petty traders to organize their goods in an orderly fashion along the sidewalks so that they do not hinder the movement of people.

For her part, the National Chairperson of NAPETUL, Comfort Doryen, assured the union’s strict adherence to government regulations.
