MONROVIA, December 15 (LINA)-The Supreme Court’s dismissal of the Writ of Prohibition against the conduct of the senatorial election on Saturday “is in no way a defeat to the petitioners,” former Senator Blamo Nelson has said.

Nelson, one of “eminent citizens” who along with the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) and the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) petitioned the Supreme Court to place a stay order on the conduct of the midterm senatorial election on December 16, added that the court’s decision “helps strengthen the law and set the future of Liberia.”

Speaking to reporters on the grounds of the Temple of Justice following the ruling of the Supreme Court Saturday, Nelson maintained that the writ of prohibition was intended to ensure the safety of the Liberian people, considering the number of citizens who have died from the Ebola virus.

He added: “Holding election amidst the deadly Ebola crisis would expose the citizens and foreign nationals to higher risk of infection.”

Nelson then lauded the effort of the framers of the petition, saying that they had “fought a good fight” in the interest of the state.

He pointed out that conditions that gave rise to calls for the suspension of the election on October 14, 2014 and the imposition of the State of Emergency still exist.

He said their request to the high court to place a stay order on the election is guaranteed by the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.
