GBARNGA, January 7 (LINA) - Stakeholders in Gbarnga City have unanimously decided to rid the city’s Broad Street of sellers and their makeshift stalls.
The decision is in preparation for the pavement of the city’s most populated commercial street, according to Bong County Superintendent Selena Polson Mappy.
Tuesday’s decision follows series of consultative meetings held in 2014 between heads of the business community, vehicle owners and the motorcycle union, and met the approval of concerned parties with a call for immediate action.
Sellers have been given up to January 12 to relocate to the Bassa Community Market or will be evicted by local authorities.
The county’s leadership disclosed that it has begun negotiation with the Chinese company CICO to pave Gbarnga Broad Street as the company is expected to begin the pavement of the Gbarnga Boulevard.
The county’s leadership has pointed out that funding for the pavement project is expected to come from the county’s Social Development Fund, a decision which must meet the approval of members of the county’s Legislative Caucus following the appropriation of the funds at the County Council Sitting that is held once a year.
The Tuesday meeting, which was held at the Administration Building, brought together stakeholders such as the Liberia Business Association (LIBA), Liberia Marketing Association (LMA), Motorcyclists' Union, Joint Security and local authorities, among others.
