A ban placed on domestic soccer matches in Liberia to control the spread of Ebola has been lifted, the Liberia Football Association has said.
The Liberia Football Association (LFA) Director of Communication Henry Flomo on Thursday said the move was based on significant gains made by the government in the fight against the deadly disease.
“Teams are encouraged to observe all preventive measures as directed by the Ministry of Health, including hand washing and the taking of temperature at practice grounds and football venues,” Flomo said.
In June 2014 the LFA imposed the ban, which also affected community matches.
“The players’ safety is more important to the LFA and could not be compromised, especially when Ebola was on the rampage between June and September 2014,” Flomo said.
“We will work with the LFA football member-clubs in the three divisions (first, second and third) to help them move the resumption process forward by providing them with technical support, including coaching, venue and logistics,” Flomo added.
Two Liberian clubs—Barracks Young Controllers (BYC) and FC Fassell—are participating in CAF champions League and CAF Cup.
