MONROVIA, October 3 (LINA) - The Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) based in Accra, Ghana has underscored that Ebola represents a threat to the world and it should be stopped immediately.
Mr. Anthony Banbury said the objective of UNMEER is to contribute toward national and international efforts to stop Ebola and end the crisis as well as save lives in the Mano River basin countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Banbury made the statement Thursday at a press conference held at the UNMIL VIP lounge at the James Sprggs Payne Airfield in the Sinkor suburb of Monrovia.
He indicated that their mission is intended to work with the Liberian, Guinean and Sierra Leonean governments and other partners around the world to ensure that Ebola is eradicated from the Mano River Basin, noting that Ebola anywhere is a threat to the rest of the world.
He stressed that Ebola Emergency Response is the first ever in the history of the UN and that they are in Liberia to learn from government officials how they can
contribute to curtail the spread of the deadly disease in the affected countries.
Banbury emphasized that if the mission can get rid of every Ebola case and remove further threat of transition from any country, UNMEER will leave Liberia, emphasizing that the UN agency in Liberia to combat the Ebola virus along with the country.
Meanwhile, the UNMEER Representative to Liberia, Richard Regan, has said the UN agency will, along with other partners and government, fill the gaps to battle Ebola in Liberia.
Regan expressed the hope that Liberians would work along with the mission to ensure that the deadly disease is eradicated as soon as possible for the good of the region.
He pointed out that UNMEER will be working in four areas which he described as Health, logistics and operation, community outreach and public information services and preventive and preparedness, adding, “Ebola represents a threat toward peace and stability for the international community”.
