MONROVIA, October 14 (LINA) - The President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), Cllr. Theophilus Gould, has termed as “unrealistic and unthinkable” calls by some politicians for the holding of the Special Senatorial election amidst the Ebola crises.

Cllr. Gould is, therefore, calling on those craving for the conduct of the special senatorial election to discontinue their quest and join the fight against the disease until it is contained before prioritizing the election.

He observed that the Ebola outbreak has caused a “decline” in the national economy and paralyzed every fabric of the Liberian society.

The LNBA President was speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency Tuesday at his law firm on Carey Street in Monrovia.

He disclosed that some members of LNBA are currently volunteering their services to sensitize and educate people in and around Montserrado County about the danger and prevention of the Ebola virus.

Cllr. Gould said the Bar, in collaboration with the Supreme Court, will liaise with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf during the State of Emergency by putting in place safeguards to curtail public gatherings and rallies that are not be in line with measures aimed at containing the virus.

According to Gould, it is surprising for lawmakers and other prominent Liberians to think about holding elections when the nation is in a national health crisis that is claiming lives of Liberians who are supposed to vote.

The House, upon receiving a communication from the President calling for the suspension of the special Senatorial Election until the Ebola virus is contained drafted a resolution mandating the National Election Commission of Liberia (NEC) to conduct said election in December this year.

The House noted that although it agreed for the postponement of the October 14, 2014 senatorial election due to the Ebola outbreak in the country, deferring it beyond this year will not augur well for the governance process of the country.
