MONROVIA, April 5 (LINA) -The United States-based Christian Non-governmental Organization, Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, has conducted a feasibility study on the Sasstown Unification Airport in Jrao Statutory District, Grand Kru County.

A reporter of the Voice of Sasstown Community radio, A. A. Blamo Monu told the Liberia News Agency Saturday via telephone that a five-man assessment team, comprising representatives of the INGO and the Liberia Domestic Airport Authority (LDAA), carried out the assessment on Tuesday, March 25.

The head of the assessment team, Venpry Taylor, informed officials of Grand Kru County during a closed door meeting that Samaritan’s Purse International Relief has decided to undertake the project based upon a request by the Government of Liberia.

Journalist Monu told LINA that Mr. Taylor said the organization will underwrite the cost of the airport rehabilitation project.

Taylor stressed the need to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the Samaritan's Purse and the county officials for the use of the county’s yellow machines to implement the project.

Taylor stated that the reconstruction work will commence following the release of the report on the survey conducted during the assessment mission.

Taylor did not say the cost of the project, but assured citizens that reconstruction work on the Sasstwon Unification Airport will be completed by July 4 this year.

The Sasstown Unification Airport was built in the 1970s, but ceased to operate as a result of the 14-year civil unrest in the country.

Making remarks during a brief welcome program,  Grand Kru County Superintendent Elizabeth Dempster thanked the Samaritan’s Purse for responding positively to the request of the Liberian Government to reconstruct the airport.

Superintendent Dempster noted that when the reconstruction is completed, the airport will help enhance the movement of goods and services in the county, especially during this year’s Independence Day celebrations, which will be co-hosted by Sinoe and Grand Kru counties.

She challenged citizens of Jrao Statutory District to cooperate with Samaritan’s Purse International Relief during the execution of the project.
